A hub is one of the oldest assemblies in vehicles since the time of chariots and wains driven by horses. Its function is wheel to axis suspension, its holding in all directions and friction reduction.
A hub design passed a long way from the wooden structure with bronze bushing inside to modern high-precision items with double-row bearings, magnetic rings and sensors.
Nowadays there are four main types of hub assemblies in the automotive industry.
Toothed belt of timing gear is installed in the most of modern cars. Advantages of this constructive solution are: low noise level, small overall dimensions, low component cost.
However bad or untimely maintenance of this structure can cause timing belt breaking that in 90% of cases leads to piston and valves "meeting" and subsequent expensive repair.
In contrast to old 8 valve engines of Lada Samara, 16 valve engine of popular Russian Lada Priora is not an exception and requires additional attention when replacing belt and rollers.
16-valve engines are equipped with two camshafts, and each of them has its own gear. A belt has greater length, goes through tensioning roller, water pump gear and additional support roller. The common problems are jamming one of the rollers and increased belt wear due to uneven, too rough roller surface.
To solve this problem TORQUE specialists have developed heavy-duty tensioning and support rollers for 16-valve engine of Lada Priora. They have articles KR5070, KR5071. One of the innovation is applying double-row ball bearings instead of single-row ones in standard model.
In contrary to single-row bearings these ones have double load-carrying capacity and much longer service life. Another difference from the standard rollers is grinding steel surface of a roller instead of original plastic surface. Smooth steel surface takes care of a belt, prevents getting small abrasive particles into plastic causing belt segregating and fraying.
Why is it important?
The point is that common recommendations for belt replacement according to the kilometrage are not quite correct. They are designed for an ideal mode of using a car that is not common in real life. For example, 60 000 km when moving mainly in suburban areas with constant velocity is not really the same thing as 60 000 km in traffic jams in a big city with average velocity 15-20 km/h. Odometer will show the same figure but in the second case a real number of machine hours run by belt and rollers will be much higher, probably, by 1,5-2 times.
In such conditions it is very important to have a high reserve factor of timing gear despite the fact that car owner can strictly follow recommended intervals for belt and rollers replacement.
Both ball and roller bearings are applied in car hubs. Roller bearings allow to increase capacity of vehicle and improve reliability of a hub assembly because a roller has larger contact area with a bearing working surface.
Renault Logan has front ball bearings and rear roller bearings installed. However auto spare part market offers only ball hub bearings except for original roller bearings. It is because of lower cost of ball bearing manufacture and sale.
But for a lot of customers reliability and long service life are more important than low cost of a hub bearing.

Appeared in 1998 Ford Focus of the first generation shook out the car market. Bright design, perfect steering response together with good ride quality, solid car body ensuring high passive safety allowed Focus to obtain "a car of the year" award and take the top lines of sales in many countries.
How could it possible to reach these values?
One of the Ford distinctive features was its rear suspension called Control blade. This title has two meanings: a big longitudinal lever has a blade-shape and vehicle response is sharp as razor blade.
And it is not just an advertising slogan. Motoring journalists and sportsmen noted that Ford Focus steering response is much better than steering response of many higher-class cars as Aston Martin, BMW and etc.
Rear suspension has several levers every of which is responsible for the corresponding wheel angle variation and carrying specified loads:
Big longitudinal lever joined with a clutch in one assembly bears longitudinal loads. It is connected to a car body through a big silent block popularly known as "butterfly" because of the typical shape. Generally, it is subject to replacement only in case of emergency breakdown.
Lower big lever, called "boat", is supported by a spring and holds a wheel in transverse direction. It is secured to subframe by special bolts with shifted position head ensuring wheel camber adjustment.
Upper curved lever known as "sickle" also defines wheel position in transverse direction. Estate cars have their own levers with the same length as "sickle" but with the straight shape. Based on mechanics experience it is possible to install "sickle" instead of straight lever on the estate cars. There will be no problems. It will be caught only with extreme loads though it hardly ever happens in real life.
At first sight lower arm or "bone" seems to be unnecessary but in fact its role is very important. When a car leans in corner suspension compresses, a wheel goes up and this lever pulls all construction back so that misalignment of wheel changes. A car protrudes an outer wheel and contact with a road by a great area in contrary to suspension, for example, of VAZ-2108 (rear semi-independent).
Let's remember everybody's favourite bus "Ikarus". Its rear wheel turns in opposition with the front one and a bus rotates on a small square. So, Ford Focus and similar modern cars performs everything vice versa.
At great speed in tight corner a rear loaded wheel rotates in the same direction as a front one through a little angle of 0,5-2 degrees. Then a car does not skid off the road but it goes sidewards. If a wheel turns in the opposite direction a car will spin and you will not be able to control it at great speed. There would arise excess turnability. It was noted a long time ago that turnability shall be moderately insufficient to ensure safer and more reliable steering.
This pattern works at Ford Focus due to lower lever-bone (in foreign term it is called «toe-link»), silent block-butterfly and blade-shape lever. Suspension "moves" when compressed a lot and changes wheel alignment angle in given direction. Up to 90-s suspensions with such complex elastokinematics were applied mainly at expensive and sport cars (Mercedes-Benz, BMW and etc.). Mass introduction became possible only due to computer modeling and design.

What advantages does this structure have? Ease of steering and therefore safety on roads.
Disadvantages? This suspension is very sensitive to overloads, moving by rough roads with overload and high velocity. Silent blocks work at full capacity and are broken away from steel frame. Thanks to Ford engineers all levers are made from steel and it makes manufacture and repair much cheaper. Maintenance of such suspensions for Mercedes and BMW is much more expensive.
When you order spare parts remember that a spring-loaded lever called "boat" have two types:
Straight. It is installed in all models of the first-generation Ford Focus and in the most models of the second-generation Ford Focus.
Curved. It is installed in some models of the second-generation Ford Focus produced as a general in Europe and in Mazda 3 with the same platform.
Ford Focus of the third generation also has the curved lever but of the different design. You hardly ever find a curved lever installed in Ford Focus of the second generation in Russia because they were supplied in our country in small numbers. Therefore, your car probably has a straight lever installed. Since it is impossible to define the type of lever by VIN-number it is easier to look under car. Moreover, stabilizer link type depends on lever type. Straight lever requires a stabilizer link of "pin" type with rubber cushions, curved lever requires a stabilizer link of F-type.
Straight lever has a particular feature. In Ford Focus of the first generation it had a hole for stabilizer link that led to cracks and metal breaking around fixing elements. In Ford Focus of the second generation that hole was reinforced by welded plate. Many spare part manufacturers continue to sell levers of the old design. To improve part reliability Torque offers levers with welded reinforcement plate that prevents cracking.
Owners should know that the best way of Ford Focus rear suspension repair is to buy a set of levers together with adjusting bolts. These sets include:
